چکیده

Background LipiDiDiet is a 6-year, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled intervention in 311 individuals with prodromal Alzheimer’s disease (AD)/mild cognitive impairment receiving the specific multinutrient combination Fortasyn Connect (Souvenaid) or calorie-matched placebo control once daily.1 AD characterized by neurodegeneration including significant synapse loss, and hippocampal formation particularly vulnerable early stages of AD. Results over first 2 3 years showed that reduced atrophy slowed decline on clinical other measures related to cognition, function, progression.2,3 Here, possible mechanistic pathways through which may affect risk progression are being explored post-hoc. Method A new type multivariate joint model was applied 3-year trial data longitudinal outcomes MRI volume (HCV) neuropsychological test battery (NTB)-memory allowed be associated dropout, each directly. Specifically, for outcome linear mixed-effects used estimate its trajectory, where, second outcome, predictor included as time-varying covariate. compared both (HCV NTB-memory vice versa), results existing models have form so-called parallel mediator (i.e. merely correlated but not influence causally). Result Comparing models, we observed strong association between changes no direct treatment effect NTB-memory. Notably, there HCV changes, together progression. Moreover, indirect effects were mediated Conclusion This useful modeling pathways. Ethanol impairs memory by reducing the synaptic connection of the hippocampal spatial neurons

Background and Objective: Ethanol has undesirable effects on memory and synaptic communication. However, its impact on the learned spatial memory is unclear. We investigated the damaging effects of ethanol on place neurons of rat’s hippocampal CA1.Materials and Methods: Sixty four male Wistar rats (250 g) were administered high (1-8 g/kg) or low (0.05-0.1 g/kg) doses of ethanol intraperit...

24-month intervention with a specific multinutrient in people with prodromal Alzheimer's disease (LipiDiDiet): a randomised, double-blind, controlled trial

BACKGROUND Nutrition is an important modifiable risk factor in Alzheimer's disease. Previous trials of the multinutrient Fortasyn Connect showed benefits in mild Alzheimer's disease dementia. LipiDiDiet investigated the effects of Fortasyn Connect on cognition and related measures in prodromal Alzheimer's disease. Here, we report the 24-month results of the trial. METHODS LipiDiDiet was a 24-...

Mathematical Modeling of the Effectiveness of Facemasks in Reducing the Spread of Novel Influenza A (H1N1)

On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak of novel influenza A (H1N1) a pandemic. With limited supplies of antivirals and vaccines, countries and individuals are looking at other ways to reduce the spread of pandemic (H1N1) 2009, particularly options that are cost effective and relatively easy to implement. Recent experiences with the 2003 SARS and 2009 H1N1 epidemic...

Understanding memory through hippocampal remapping.

Memory interference is a common cause of forgetting. Interference is a byproduct of the need to balance the formation of well-differentiated representations against the ability to retrieve memories from cues that are not identical to the original experience. How the brain accomplishes this has remained elusive. Here we review how insights can be gained from studies of an apparently unrelated ph...
